The Student Museum is a gorgeous brick building, two stories tall with beautiful landscaping of all different types of plants. The inside is full of different rooms; the Native American room, the Pioneer room, the Turn of the Century room, Grandma's Attic, Geography lab, and an auditorium. It has beautiful hand blown glass windows and bull's eye crown molding. The facility is located in downtown Sanford amongst houses off of 17-92. After the tour, I received a Fact sheet on the museum. It's purpose is to teach social studies to fourth graders typically. It has hands on activities geared toward learning. It was constructed in 1902 and is the oldest school in Seminole county.
There are only two women who work at the museum and they fear that it is going to be shut down soon. When you are in fourth grade in Seminole County it is one of the field trips that you will take so that you can better understand Florida's history. Over 6,000 students visit the museum a year. The Demonstration Gardens are geared towards all of the rooms and the things that would typically be grown during this period in history. They live on the philosophy: "Tell me and I forget, Show me and I remember, Involve me and I understand." The old seats that were in the museum prove that we really have it quite good and that are desks are couches compared to what they were sitting in all day. I learned some of Sanford's history for example: the importance of oranges, it being the celery capital, and the "Gateway City." I also learned how things changed over time and the language transition into the new age.
